The Door Security and Safety Foundation (DSSF), in collaboration with Door and Hardware Institute® (DHI), is pleased to announce the release of “Are Your Door Openings Secure?”, a series of recommended industry guidelines that aim to advance the understanding of door openings security and equip users and operators with knowledge that can be used throughout an architectural project’s lifecycle.
“Currently, there is no national door security standard in the market, and so, the term ‘security’ is loosely translated and enforced by those that have the power to do something about it but lack the resources and technical knowledge necessary to mitigate risk effectively,” stated DHI Chief Executive Officer Cedric Calhoun, FASAE, CAE. “This critical resource works to promote door opening safety education and awareness in communities everywhere, with the goals of empowering door opening operators and users, activating new educational opportunities for stakeholders and transforming safety outcomes across the industry.”
“Are Your Door Openings Secure?” outlines three critical levels of security and serves as a valuable tool for educating the public and providing advice on specifying and furnishing the necessary attributes that make up a secure door opening on any project. The document serves three major functions:
- Serves as a precursor to a reference standard for industry professionals and those operating door openings.
- Outlines the state of the opening as it should be used, inclusive of recommended material make-up of the door, frame, and hardware on a minimum acceptance outline.
- Allows the user of the document to gain access to a vast network of certified industry professionals that are available to assist during any phase of a project through DHI’s “Find a Pro” Network.
Additionally, this tool offers technical support to industry experts for construction and installation while also supporting key decision-making for schools, municipalities, and other groups when evaluating safety risks.
